Part of Desta’s mission is to provide educational resources for Black students completing their high school diploma, as well as supporting individuals who have vocational and post-secondary goals. During the last year, Desta has been looking for new ways to contribute to the long term change we’d like to see in the Black community. One of these contributions is the creation of the Desta Scholarship Fund, a program benefiting up to 12 students a year based on their financial need, academic achievement, community involvement, leadership skills and dedication to their goals.

2021 APPLICATION

The Desta Scholarship Fund is focused on attracting students who have shown academic excellence and community engagement, with the goal of supporting them as they begin their postsecondary journey. Our hope is that by removing some of the financial barriers to education, students will be better equipped to tackle the work ahead of them. We are committed to providing frameworks that can help Black students rise and be the best versions of themselves that they can be. This fund is intended to support students at any level of post-secondary education, including trade schools and professional training.

Thanks to a generous endowment from the Cole Foundation, The Desta Scholarship Fund is poised to offer scholarships to up to 12 students between now and April 2022. Applications will open on March 15, 2021 and will be accepted year-round.  The selection committee will meet in July 2021, October 2021, January 2022 and April 2022 to select candidates on an on-going basis.

Qualifying applicants must meet all selection criteria:

  • Be a Black Canadian student pursuing a post-secondary educational program with a minimum average of 70%
  • Be a Black Canadian citizen or Permanent Resident residing in the Greater Montreal area
  • Be admitted to a recognized Canadian university, CEGEP or vocational school
  • Demonstrate a need for financial assistance
  • Demonstrate leadership in community service and volunteer activities

*Eligible candidates will be contacted by our selection committee for a short interview if considered for an award.
